Who needs an editor?
Just about anyone who writes for publication. It is extremely difficult to edit one's own work because we are just too close.
The mind in "creative mode" is different from the mind in "editing mode." Even if we are experts in grammar and punctuation, the eye often sees what it expects to see rather than what is there.
Creativity is a very "now" process. Authors often need a "third eye" to pick out redundancies; glitches in continuity; words and images that don't express what is intended; mixed metaphors; awkward sentence structures; stilted language; rhythm problems; superfluous words or explanations that weigh writing down and detract from its power; and dialogue that doesn't ring true.
How I work:
If you think you might be interested in having me edit your work, send me a sample of two double-spaced pages. I will return the pages edited and with comments that tell you why I made each change. Then we can discuss rates and you can make an informed decision.
Rates for editing vary depending upon whether a manuscript is in need of a technical touch up or major doctoring.

"This week I am signing contract with Perigee Books, a division of Putnam Publishing. Clearly, I owe you a debt of gratitude for your contribution to editing this book. The chief editor at Putnam commented that, in her opinion, the text was extremely well edited and would require little additional work to prepare it for publication."
"Your comments concerning character development were so insightful that I went back and rewrote portions of many chapters in order to develop the characters more fully...I got rid of a lot of excess verbiage in keeping with your suggestion to let the characters do the talking." (JK)
"The subject matter is of a difficult nature and Jae has been very meticulous in insuring that the topics are addressed clearly and understandably....As result of her astute feedback, the author of the book made a number of significant changes to insure that the work is more accurate and precise." Elyse Gold
"I'm really impressed how much you add to my ideas, and sometimes even feel a bit guilty thinking this book will show me as author, when you've contributed so much to make it not sound like a High School attempt at fiction."
"Jae, you're a magician. I love all of your changes and will use every one. How do you do it so well???"
Your careful editing made a story that tended to be a little on the negative side a much more positive read. Simplifying the sentence structure while making the meaning clearer is a very good trick indeed. It is truly magic. Thank you so much you are the best.
Before consulting you, I sent the first three chapters of my manuscript to several literary agents, and it was rejected for "the quality of the work." Having sent the first three edited chapters, they have now expressed a desire to see the whole manuscript. Now I'm sure it'll be accepted.
Working with Jae was the best decision I could have made. In addition to correcting syntax and grammatical errors, Jae greatly improved the flow of the manuscript. Jae went above and beyond my expectations when she talked with me for over an hour on the phone to provide me with additional tips and suggestions for enhancing my book the next time I revise it. Jae's help and advice is priceless to me. Thank you, Jae!
Your critique: What a tour de force! I am excited and indebted. I'm glad I finally had the wit to know that I needed help, and I've gotten more from you than I could have expected.
I just wanted to compliment you highly on the editing work you have been doing for me. You have an uncanny grasp of words. I get goose bumps when hear the voice of the work now. I can't thank you enough!
Thanks again for the wonderfully creative work you have done on my book. You took my story and my words but you made it come alive. Sending my manuscript to you proved to be a good decision. I now can be justly proud of my work. You were easy to work with, and you listened when we disagreed--which happened rarely. Also, with your Canadian-English spell-check, you kept me on track! Thank you, Jae. I would have no hesitation in recommending you to other budding authors.
Thank you so much for the TLC you gave to my manuscript. What a superb job. You understood what I tried to say and kept the changes well within my own writing style. I so admire your talent to make a sentence come to life with subtle changes and your marvelous use of words. You have a true gift. It was a such pleasure working with you Jae. I would highly recommend your editing services to anyone. Jae is in a class of her own. She's totally professional, very reasonable with her fees, and most importantly, she's easy to work with. Unlike other writers I've worked with, who seemed only concerned with how fast they could finish, Jae put real thought into the project. I would never ever consider using anyone else. The manuscript looks great; I'm very pleased with the way it's turned out. Many dimensions to the work have appeared that I hadn't seen before. |
